Obituary for Arlene G. Walter

Arlene Gertrude (Jandt) Barnes Walter died on Friday, May 16, 2025, 15 days shy of her 101 birthday! She lived a good, long life and we are thankful for every minute!

Arlene was born on June 1, 1924, to Gertrude (Schams) and George Jandt. She grew up in Bangor, WI and graduated from Bangor High School in 1942. She married Charles Barnes in 1944. They lived for a short time in La Crosse, WI but moved to Bangor to raise their family. Arlene worked as a waitress, school secretary/librarian’s assistant, and receptionist in the Bangor/La Crosse area.

After Chuck’s death, she met and married Jerome Walter. They lived in La Crosse and Sparta. They traveled to Florida and Arizona to visit family and friends but, mostly, for Spring Training! She had many friends, was well respected, and was loved by many.

Arlene is survived by her children, George (Sandra) Barnes, Dana (Gary) Peterson, LeAnn Flores, Amy (Jon) Leonhardt, and Julie (Jerry) Ender; stepchildren, Ron Walter, Roger (Kathleen) Walter, Steve (Wendy) Walter, Mike (Barb) Walter, David (Patty Jo) Walter, and Patricia (Ken) Filloon; grandchildren, Todd and Tim Barnes, Erika Evanko, David Peterson, Kendra Alex, Brianna Ritter, Jenavieve Hemmersbach, Erica Kelly, Bryce, and Dylan Walter, Jason Walter, Katie Walter, Patrick Walter, Tanya Ghali, and Emilie and Ryan Filloon; and step-grandchildren, Brandon Collard and Calvin, Joe, and Jon Leonhardt. She is further survived by 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many special nieces and nephews. She was very proud of all of us!

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ardell Schroeder; her husbands, Chuck Barnes and Jerry Walter; grandson, Peter Walter; sons-in-law, Jim Collard and Christopher Flores; and step-grandson, Bryce Collard.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Rolling Hills for their excellent care of Arlene for the past 13 years. You were her family too!

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 612 N. Water St., Sparta. Pastor Josh Buzbee will officiate. Burial will follow in Burns Cemetery, rural Bangor. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m., until the time of service, Wednesday, May 28th, at the church.
