Obituary for Milton J. Burroughs

On June 4, 2025, Milton Burroughs of Caledonia went home to the Lord at the age of 83. He passed peacefully and surrounded by his loved ones at his home. Milton was born September 26, 1941, to Mabel (Henry) and Jesse Burroughs. He married Elaine Breeser on July 15, 1961, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Caledonia, MN.

He loved spending time with family and working on the farm. Even in his later years he would insist on spending hours cleaning out his woods. It was his pride and joy and he wanted to ensure it was well maintained. He worked as an artificial inseminator at Accelerated Genetics in Westby, WI, before his retirement in 2005.

He and the love of his life, Elaine enjoyed stopping at Rudy’s in La Crosse for his favorite sweet treat, a strawberry milkshake. Even in his last weeks of life he would always ask for his grandchildren to bring him one home after a trip to La Crosse. He always enjoyed listening to his recording of the Highwaymen and would invite anyone at the house into his den to listen with him. One of his favorite visitors to the farm was his great-granddaughter, Juliana (Samantha Steele) who was born on their 60th wedding anniversary. They had a very special connection despite their 80 year age gap.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Elaine (Breeser); children, Terry (Ronda) Burroughs, (Wausau), Brenda (Duey) Johnson, (Caledonia), Sherry Steele, (Caledonia), and Jeff (Sue) Burroughs, (Woodbury); sisters, Alice Schleich, Joan (Lee) Breeser, Donna Schlinsog, Jeannie (Larry) Kruse, Janice Burroughs, and Erma Burroughs; as well as his beloved 7 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Mabel Burroughs; in-laws, Laura and John Breeser; sisters, Lucille (Bob) Colsch and Lois (Lyle) Nelson; brothers, Bob Burroughs, Donnie (Bonnie) Burroughs, and Tim Burroughs; son-in-law, Mike Steele; sisters-in-law, Ruth Breeser and Luella (Merlin) Meyer; brothers-in-law, Jack Schleich and Al Schlinsog.

A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Fredrickson Funeral Home, Caledonia Chapel, 518 W. Main St. Caledonia. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. and conclude at 12 noon with a Catholic prayer service. Msgr. Jeffrey Burrill will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia.
