Obituary for Kenneth E. "Kenny" Schaller
Kenneth Edward Schaller of Reno, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025, at Emplify Health by Gundersen with family by his side.
Ken was born on August 12, 1954, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Clarence and Esther (Hahn) Schaller. He often spoke fondly of his childhood in Reno, where he spent countless days riding bikes, fishing, and exploring the surrounding bluffs and backwaters with friends.
A 1972 graduate of La Crescent High School, Ken began his career at G. Heileman Brewing in LaCrosse. He later went on to work for Interstate Power Company (later known as Alliant Energy) at the Lansing Power Plant—a career to which he dedicated nearly 40 years.
On September 12, 1987, Ken married Kerry (Serres) Schaller. Together they built a home and created a life filled with laughter, hard work, and adventure. Ken and Kerry welcomed four children between 1988 and 1993. Ken had many passions over the years—cars, hunting, fishing, trapping, and traveling, to name a few. He loved sharing his appreciation for the outdoors with his kids, teaching them to hunt, fish, explore, and find joy in nature.
When his children developed an interest in horses, Ken’s support led to the purchase of one pony—and eventually six more. He often joked that horses were something he’d sworn he’d never own, but he grew especially fond of the pony “Dusty.” He could often be seen leading the pack in a cart pulled by Dusty—a different kind of “horsepower” than he was used to.
Ken took great pride in his family history, collecting photos, stories, and mementos from years gone by. He was a jack of all trades—always ready to lend advice or supervise a project. His wit, sense of humor and easygoing nature stayed with him through every season of life. He enjoyed quiet days with his dogs and a classic western on TV, and never turned down a good game night with family.
Ken is survived by his wife, Kerry; children Amelia (Kevan) Meiners, Molly (Adam) Morris, Betsy (Ron) Beck, and Nick (Elizabeth) Schaller; cherished grandson Corbin Schaller; and he was looking forward to the arrival of grandchild “Baby Beck,” expected March 2026. He is also survived by his brother, Gary Schaller; special friends Rick and Joni Voshart, and Ronnie Sauer; as well as many beloved cousins and extended family. His faithful dogs Rosco, Daisy, and Reggie will also miss his companionship and warm lap.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, many aunts and uncles, and his loyal four-legged friends Cooter and Cocoa as well as his basset hound, Buford.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the team at the Onalaska Gundersen Dialysis Center for their compassionate care over the years, as well as the staff at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital for their kindness and support in his final days.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life in Kenny’s honor on Friday, November 7, 2025 from 3pm-7pm, held at the New Albin Community Center in New Albin, Iowa.
Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Caledonia, is assisting the family with arrangements.
