Obituary for Joann R. Bjergum


Joann R. Bjergum, age 80, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, at White Pines Assisted Living in Blaine, Minnesota.

Joann was born on May 18, 1945, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Gerhard and Rose Pieper. She grew up in Caledonia, Minnesota, a community she loved dearly and where she formed many lifelong friendships that meant the world to her.

On November 2, 1963, Joann married the love of her life, Larry Bjergum. Together they shared 52 wonderful years of marriage, building a life filled with love, laughter, and deep devotion to one another.

Joann is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Larry Bjergum; her parents, Gerhard and Rose Pieper; her sister, Nancy Pieper; brother-in-law, Duwayne Bjergum; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Donna (Truman) Omodt; and nephew, Mark Karels.

She is survived by her sister, Ruby (Leland) Karels; cherished cousins; and a large extended family of nieces and nephews including special nieces, Pam (Lyle) Horihan , Laurel (Dave) Matson, and Julie (Steve) Karels Johnson; and many great and great-great-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by many dear friends who were like family to her.

Joann found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved gardening, going on long drives, shopping, sitting on her porch visiting with friends, and lovingly caring for the stray cats that found their way to her. A social soul, Joann was deeply grateful for her many amazing friends and the connections she nurtured throughout her life.

Joann will be remembered for her beautiful smile that lit up every room and her remarkable ability to make everyone feel loved and welcome. Her kindness, warmth, and gentle spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

A Christian Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., February 21, 2026, at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, 650 N. Kingston St., Caledonia. Rev. Tom Schultz will officiate. A visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at the church. A private burial will be held at a later date.
