Obituary for Thomas M. Fitzpatrick

Thomas "Tom" Fitzpatrick, a dedicated educator, accomplished attorney, former political candidate, and devoted husband and father, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2026.

Tom was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Elizabeth "Betty" and Merle T. Fitzpatrick and graduated from Aquinas High School in 1962. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse (UWL) before completing his master’s degree in political science.

A lifelong scholar with a passion for politics, debate, and public service, Tom shared his knowledge as a political science professor at Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania, and later returned to teach at UWL. He earned his law degree from UW Madison and established a prominent legal career in La Crosse. Practicing for over 47 years, Tom served as an Assistant District Attorney for La Crosse County, and co-founded his own law firm. His commitment to public leadership culminated in his 1994 campaign for the United States Senate.

As an attorney, Tom was a compassionate advocate for his clients and underserved communities. Throughout his life, he fought tirelessly for those who needed legal assistance, regardless of their circumstances.

Throughout his life, Tom remained an active civic leader deeply committed to strengthening his community. He proudly served on the Board of Directors for the Family & Children's Center as well as the Board of Directors for Leader Ethics.

A man of unwavering work ethic, Tom dedicated his life to providing for his family. He purchased land where he designed and built the family home, tirelessly transforming the property into a peaceful, park-like retreat for loved ones to enjoy. Tom encouraged those around him never to “play small,” inspiring them to aim higher and reach their fullest potential.

Tom took great joy in exploring the world and traveling across the country to visit his family. An avid lover of the outdoors, he skied until he was 80 never letting age stop him. Above all, he was a steady, devoted presence in the lives of those he loved.

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Holly Blanchard; his brother, Ronald Fitzpatrick (Patty); ex-wives Mary Marshall and Sandra Rybold; his children, Michael T. Fitzpatrick (Kathleen), David J. Fitzpatrick (Laura), Kathleen M. Fitzpatrick, Heather M. Udo (Aniekan), Molly M. Centofanti (Dustin), Amy M. Barnes (Matthew), Daniel T. Fitzpatrick, and Kelly M. Fitzpatrick; and his stepson, Nicholas J. Deml (Halley).

He also leaves behind sixteen cherished grandchildren and his faithful dog, Jack.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Betty Fitzpatrick; his brothers, Richard Fitzpatrick (Carol) and Kenneth Fitzpatrick; and his beloved children, James, Joseph, and Ann Fitzpatrick.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Fredrickson Funeral Home. Day and time of the Memorial service and celebration of Tom's life will be added to this obituary when available. Online condolences may be offered to the family at this website.
